From Copenhagen to Helsinki—and further into the movement (4/4)
Dyrenes Alliance has returned from Moominvalley: Lessons in venturing into the unknown and we share our international collaborations here. Welcome to the final blog post in the series, covering the entire journey and leaving you with free tools to empower your own efforts for a greener world!
On the way to Finland
On a cool November Monday morning, our young activists set off for Finland's capital, Helsinki.
We traveled by high-speed train from Copenhagen to Stockholm, where we boarded the ferry to Turku, located in western Finland. The final leg to Helsinki was a two-hour train ride through Finland’s forested landscape.
Expectations for a greener future
This November, we from Dyrenes Alliance head to Helsinki. Not just to sightsee (okay... maybe a little), but to join with Finnish activists in Viral vegans and explore how young people can shape a greener Europe through plant-based solutions.
Before stepping into the unknown, we set goals for the days ahead. Our suitcase was of course packed with the hope of building strong ties with an equivalent Finnish animal rights organization, Viral vegansand diving into how youth can drive a greener Europe through plant-based solutions.
First meeting with Viral vegans
The day we arrived in Helsinki, we met with Benjamin Pitkanen, co-founder of the animal rights group Viral vegans. He introduced us to a range of local vegan snacks: chips, gummy candy, cinnamon rolls, and their classic karjalanpiirakka—a sort of rice pudding tart. There was something for both savory and sweet cravings, and with our snack meters full, we turned in early.
Activism and social media in practice
On Friday morning, we met Pavel Tahkovuori, co-founder of Viral vegans, to talk about social media campaigning.
