Who is Dyrenes Alliance?

Youth for a just world for animals

Dyrenes Alliance – youth, activism, and hope since 2008

Dyrenes Alliance is a youth-focused organization for animal rights in Denmark. Since 2008, we have united young people determined to create change for animals, building a movement driven by activism, community, and plant-based solutions.

It started with a small group of young people handing out flyers on streets and campuses to spotlight animals' plight. Today, Dyrenes Alliance has grown into a nationwide, democratic organization with 16 local chapters across the country, where volunteers generate activity, community, and change for animals.

We fight for a future free from animal exploitation while engaging and empowering the next generation of activists. Our work spans broadly: organizing demonstrations, events, workshops, debates, and film screenings; running campaigns; and creating communities where more people find their path to advancing animal rights.

How we create change for animals

At Dyrenes Alliance, we work for change on multiple fronts simultaneously.

We engage youth in activism and community through our local chapters, where volunteers lead campaigns, events, and visibility for the animal rights cause.

We make plant-based an easier choice through initiatives that empower more people to act in practice.

And we pursue concrete improvements for animals through campaigns, partnerships, and education that shift norms, habits, and decisions.

Effective activism for animals

Our work targets both mindset change and tangible solutions.

Through VeganerUdfordringen, we inspire thousands annually to try plant-based meals for 22 days, offering recipes, tips, and support along the way.

Through Plantevækst, we partner with workplaces and cafeterias to add more plant-based meals to menus and make plant-based choices easier day-to-day.

Simultaneously, we raise awareness of animals' plight through activism, campaigns, and education, driving change that matters in practice.

Nationwide activism

• We organize around 400 activities annually via our local chapters.

• Every year, we inspire approximately 12,000 people to eat more plant-based through VeganerUdfordringen.

• We collaborate with both Danish and international organizations to maximize impact for animals.

• We engage media, politicians, businesses, and cafeterias to promote plant-based solutions.

Results over the years

Over the years, Dyrenes Alliance has contributed to numerous changes for animals. Some results come from our own efforts, others from partnerships with strong allies. Together, they show what persistent work for animals can achieve.

Among other things, we have helped to:

  • inspire thousands to live more plant-based and animal-friendly lives

  • get over 200 companies to join the fur-free list

  • contribute to banning dog and cat fur in Denmark

  • get elephants out of circuses

  • help push for the EU ban on cosmetic animal testing

  • help ban production and sale of fox fur in Denmark

  • support the ban on selling non-Greenlandic seal fur in Denmark

  • persuade Café Vivaldi, Circle K, Halifax, Lidl, Scandic, 7-Eleven, Aldi, Salling Group, and REMA 1000 to drop turbo chickens

  • convince Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, Hilton, Best Western, Starbucks, Radisson Hotel Group, and Marriott to drop cage eggs

Today, we build on that legacy by engaging youth, strengthening the animal rights movement, and creating a future where fewer animals are exploited.

Theory of Change: How we create change!

Our work at Dyrenes Alliance is driven by a clear vision: a world where all animals are free. But this won't happen overnight. That's why we've developed this visual tool, "Theory of Change," which provides an overview of our work and how we create change.

Theory of Change – how we create change in Dyrenes Alliance

An overview of our Theory of Change

Our Theory of Change isn’t just about individual activities we carry out but how they form a cohesive strategy toward our ultimate goal: animal liberation. We illustrate the stages from where we are today to where we aim to be.

Theory of Change links our resources—our committed members and activists, financial support, and research—with our actions such as everyday activism, political advocacy, and VeganerUdfordringen. These actions lead to concrete outcomes: greater awareness of animal rights and veganism, political changes, and broader acceptance of veganism. But our Theory of Change doesn’t stop at outputs. It outlines the long-term societal impact we seek: improved conditions for animals, reduced animal suffering, and ultimately, full animal liberation.

Every signature we gather, every member we educate, every flyer we hand out, and every person we inspire to take VeganerUdfordringen and become veganers is part of this bigger plan. We know every action counts, and together these actions create waves of change that gradually build a more compassionate and just society.

What does our Theory of Change mean for you?

This visual overview isn’t just a guide for our work at Dyrenes Alliance. It’s also an explanation for you. We want to be transparent about how and why we work the way we do, always centering animal rights and liberation.

When you support our organization, you’re not just part of a single campaign or act. You’re part of this larger plan, a plan aimed at full animal liberation. You help create waves of change that will shape a society where all animals are treated with dignity and respect. We believe in the power of our community and deeply appreciate your support. Together, we can make the world better for all animals.

Note: We recognize the world around us is constantly changing, and so are our organization and Theory of Change. That’s why our Theory of Change will be regularly updated and developed. If you have questions, feel free to contact us!

You can make a difference

Our work depends entirely on our members. There would be no activism without volunteers, and no organization without financial support. That’s why we’re deeply grateful to everyone who supports Dyrenes Alliance and our fight for a better world for animals and the climate. If you’re not a member yet, you can join here or become a super supporter by donating to our shared cause.

Nationwide activism for animals

Since 2008, Dyrenes Alliance has expanded to cover multiple local areas across Denmark. Each local chapter maintains an active Facebook page where you can follow updates. You can always contact the chapter if you have specific questions for your area’s coordinators or sign up for your local SMS list. See the overview of local chapters under local chapters.
