Dyrenes Ambassador: Greener Cafeterias for a Better Future

Imagine how incredible it would be if you came to school or work, and all the food in the cafeteria was plant-based! Imagine never having to ask “Is this vegan?” almost every day, or being surrounded by dead animals while you eat.

That’s exactly the goal of Dyrenes Alliance’s newest project, Animal Ambassador, har.

In this project, we focus on cafeterias across Denmark, helping them become greener and more animal-friendly. We know many young people are passionate about making a difference for animals and the planet, and we want to make it as easy as possible for them to have maximum impact. That’s why we start by holding workshops, primarily at youth education institutions, both to spread awareness about veganism and animal rights among young people, and to connect with students who are already on the vegan journey and might want to join our Dyrenes Ambassador Youth Community. Here, we work together for greener cafeterias and a better world. 💚

Dyrenes Ambassador - Maya hosts workshop at Roskilde Festival Højskole

Dyrenes Ambassador is underway

On January 25, I was at Gefion Gymnasium in central Copenhagen to hold our very first workshop. Even though it was early in the morning, the students were highly engaged. We had great debates and deep conversations, mainly about the ethics of eating animals — a topic many had never really considered before. We saw many, though not all, were very receptive to (and sometimes agreed with) the message that a life without eating animals is not only possible but essential and necessary.

“A really good and thought-provoking presentation that challenged students to actively reflect on their own values, which is exactly what we want in philosophy.”

- Jon, philosophy teacher at Gefion Gymnasium

The following week, the next workshop took place—this time at Roskilde Festival Højskole, with a different approach. This workshop focused more on activism and the various activities activists can join at Dyrenes Alliance. We talked a lot about animal rights, as it’s the reason we do activism, and everyone immediately engaged in the activities we had prepared. We did spectrum lines, role-playing, and small group debates, and the students found it both enjoyable and informative.

“I thought the workshop was good and varied, and that the students were very actively involved. I believe they were sufficiently informed and challenged.”

- Freja, instructor at Roskilde Festival Højskole

We’re over the moon about our first two workshops’ success! It’s truly inspiring to see young people debating and even coming to the conclusion that there might be a better way to live—one that doesn’t involve killing animals.

We look forward to many more workshops to come!
